M Shed
Princes Wharf, Wapping Road, Bristol BS1 4RN
M Shed, the Museum of Bristol, opened in 2011 to general delight: an innovative museum that tells the story of Bristol from hot-air balloons and buses to slavery and the St Paul’s Carnival. Uniquely, it’s not just about the past, but aims to constantly document how we live now. So you can record your thoughts and opinions about various subjects, vote on your favourite Bristolian word, write about your experiences of daily life, and much more. The upper gallery has popular changing art exhibitions, which has recently included documentary photography by Martin Parr and fashion photography by Norman Parkinson, and on the whole it’s engaging and forward-looking in its content, displays and technology – quite the model of a modern museum. What’s more it’s free.
