Riverstation
The Grove, Bristol BS1 4RB
This former river police station has got one of the best restaurant views in the city from its terrace over the water. Upstairs there’s a fine-dining restaurant serving Modern European food (think rib-eye steak, pan-fried sea bass, monkfish en croute) while downstairs the bar does a mean cocktail and serves more informal snacks, including Portuguese custard tarts and an array of cakes in the afternoon. You’ll kick yourself for ordering coffee when you see the tea: teapots arrive with bright knitted tea cosies to make you smile. It’s a special place when the sun goes down and the lights start twinkling; romantic and perfect for a sophisticated date, perhaps, or a celebratory dinner.
