Hotel du Vin Bistro
The Sugar House, Narrow Lewins Mead, Bristol BS1 2NU
The Hotel du Vin’s excellent bistro is open to all, whether or not you are staying in Bristol’s classiest hotel – and thank goodness. Its breakfasts are fantastic, but dinner here really is something else, making the most of all the best produce the south-west has to offer, including Bath soft cheese, Creedy Carver barn-reared poultry and much more. The dining room is a little stuffy, but in a good way – after all, coming to eat here demands a certain sense of occasion. Typical dishes include partridge with bread sauce, coq au vin, and honey-glazed duck breast. And it wouldn’t be Hotel du Vin without fantastic wines, immensely knowledgeable sommeliers. There’s also the Sugar House Bar, whose leather armchairs and exquisite whiskies make for a great place to finish up. All in all, this is one of the city’s best places for a celebratory dinner, and the restaurant also hosts many wine and food matching events, including Spanish tapas tasting, Italian antipasti tasting and Sommelier Saturdays, where you can enjoy wine-matched charcuterie and cheese in the afternoon.
