Pallant of Arundel
17 High Street Arundel West Sussex BN18 9AD
This fab little deli and wine merchant is a bit of a landmark in Arundel – in fact, a grocer’s shop has stood on this spot for well over a century. The current owners, Mark Robinson and Jonathan Brantigan, are keen to fly the flag for small producers, both local and further afield, and there’s a mountain of tasty Sussex produce on the shelves and counters, including Sussex-based Higgidy pies and quiches, local chutneys and jams, a dozen or so Sussex cheeses and even locally roasted coffee beans. For a truly superior picnic, pick up a loaf of bread (baked on-site daily), some oozing cheeses from the deli counter, and a bottle or two of beer from Arundel Brewery (or, why not, a bottle of fizz from award-winning Sussex vineyard Nyetimber), and wend your way along the banks of the River Arun as it meanders lazily through the water meadows east of town. Even easier, simply plump for Pallant’s own Sussex picnic hamper (£45 for two people).
