This hideaway campsite above Ullswater is a real family favourite, set amid the fells on an old Cumbrian farmstead, with dramatic views to all sides. It has pitches for caravans and campervans, grassy pitches for tents, and a number of different glamping options, most of which enjoy terrific views over Ullswater down below, with Helvellyn and Fairfield to the west and Barton, Hallin and Place Fells to the south.

Their eco-hearts are in the right place too. It's home to the UK’s first zero-waste campsite shop and they generate most of their energy (including hot water) from solar and renewable sources. Their commitment to sustainability is also manifest in their unique 'Glamping Burrows', large underground living spaces with awesome views that are insulated and energy-efficient, and virtually invisible unless you know where to look; they can accommodate up to six people and some also take dogs, plus they have their own separate WCs and basin. It doesn't stop there, they've recently introduced their all new carbon positive Gingerbread Houses too.  Sleeping 2 adults and 4 children on a sleep ledge and featuring Private WC, shower and basin, a simple kitchen, underfloor heating, decking, picnic table and BBQ stone. There are a clutch of pods, cabins and bell tent glamping options too, as well as some flat pitches for tents overlooking mist-shrouded Ullswater in the valley below. All have access to the first-rate facilities, which include the likes of super-fast wifi at your pitch and even a special bath for washing your dog.

The site is also home to a specially created wildflower meadow, and what they describe as 'the best campsite bar in Britain' – quite a claim, but we like what they've done with the converted Cumbrian long barn, from the toasty wood-burning fireplace to local ales on offer at the bar, including their own ‘Quiet Pint’ brew.  A side room has games like table tennis and air hockey for children, while another is set aside for meetings, yoga or group events.

There's a shop on site too, while as well as the games room children get the run of an adventure playground – or you can wear them out on local walks right from the campsite, including the one to Aira Force waterfall. Ullswater itself is a mile and a half down the hill, and on arrival they provide a local walking guide, with walks suitable for all family members so you should find one that suits you – whether it’s a full-on lung workout up the fells or an amble with the kids. They have an on-site sustainable pizza restaurant called 'The Quiet Bite' serving crepes by day and pizza by night! The nearest pub is the cosy Brackenrigg Inn (at the turn-off for the campsite) – a good bet for bar meals.
