The Queens Head sits high on the sides of one of Cumbria’s most ancient and fascinating valleys; the Romans used this route as one of their main thoroughfares north and Beatrix Potter once owned the farm down in the valley. The hotel itself dates back to the 17th century but, as you step through the doors, you are welcomed by a bright, crisp, contemporary interior with dozens of nooks and crannies to explore.
The bar is large and welcoming, with warm fires and robust dinners served through the winter and outdoor dining with lighter menus for the warmer months. Dotted around are interesting artefacts relating to the local history, including the Mayor’s Chair – a magnificent oak throne and surely the most suitable place to enjoy a sumptuous Sunday lunch. Dining is relaxed and informal with plenty of space for you, and your dog, to spread out and enjoy your meal.
The hotel reopened a couple of years ago after a major refurbishment, and like the pub itself the bedrooms are all thoroughly up-to-date, with big comfy beds and pristine bathrooms. Dogs are welcomed into eight of their ten bedrooms and all but one small room in the dining area. Being a dog lover is seen as an essential qualification for working here; bowls and treats are on offer at the bar and all dogs can expect to be spoiled rotten. There’s even a dog shower outside to clean up muddy pooches. According to bar manager Mark, 'there’s no such thing as ‘too many dogs’.
Throughout the year they also host a number of dog themed events, including a local Hound Trail – one of Cumbria’s oldest sports – where a pack of specially bred hounds race around the hills following a laid down scent trail. There’s a small outdoor garden for late night ‘walkies’, miles of stunning rambles right from the front door and a free leaflet detailing three dog friendly hikes.
