Cote How Organic
Rydal Grasmere LA22 9LW
"Everyone comes for the scones" is the popular refrain, and many happily claim them to be the best in the world – and at Cote How they bake all day, so you should get them straight from the oven. You can have afternoon tea in the oak-beamed parlour, though with the merest hint of sun the parasol-shaded terrace and gardens come into their own, and nearby walks lead down to Rydal Water or across to Wordsworth's old house at Rydal Mount. And you will need a walk, once you've had a go at the superior sarnies, seasonal veggie soup, lemon drizzle cake and traditional Cumbrian tea-bread. Everything is organic, even an accompanying glass of wine or champagne. If the weather's poor, and especially if you're planning a winter trip, it's best to call first to check it's open.
