Whitby's budget choice has the best location in town, right by the ruined abbey at the top of the 199 Steps (and overnight guests get free entry to the abbey too). Moreover, refurbished Abbey House is no sackcloth-and-ashes hostel, but an elegant country home with fantastic gardens and views, private and family rooms (all en-suite) and its own tearoom. There's something very genteel about the place – strolling through the historic rooms, lounging in the conservatory and garden with its unbeatable abbey views, and sipping a drink as the lights go down over Whitby far below.

Most of the rooms are bunk-bedded, though three do have double beds, and 23 are now en-suite, many retaining their original Georgian features, from fireplaces to stained glass. There's also disabled access with allocated parking and a lift to a specially adapted bedroom. A large self-catering kitchen helps out families and anyone on a budget, while the nearest pub, the Duke of York, is straight down at the bottom of the 199 Steps. The hostel is extremely popular, so advance bookings are recommended, especially for an en-suite or disabled-access room.

Nearby

The chilling tale of Bram Stokers’ Dracula was in fact inspired by the Abbey in Whitby, a few minutes' walk away from the hostel, and a stay with us offers a free visit to the town’s iconic attraction. Several other features of Whitby draw people to our quaint little town such as – the beach and the seafront, filled with arcades and bars for when you have finished wandering the sands or rock-pooling; the Whitby Pavilion, where many events are held at different times of the year, including performances by local dramatic and musical societies; the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, the gateway to the neighbouring moors; the heritage and history of the old fishing town, much of which still remains; and of course, fish and chips! In Whitby, there are many specialty shops that sell everything from chocolate to jewellery.

The Owner Says

Situated in an idyllic seaside town, close to the beach, YHA Whitby Abbey House is the perfect stay for all, with many family rooms, dormitory beds and even our premium bell tents available. Its friendly and welcoming staff are always on hand to make you feel at home and the excellent tearooms have a wide range of delicious treats for you to indulge in, while the little ones play in a safe area. In addition to this, there is a young children’s playroom for guests, set with their favourite toys and games for when you want to relax.

The hostel itself has many excellent features. It has a ‘psychic garden’, which is of Tudor design and overlooks the scenic river that runs through the centre of the town; perfect for anyone hoping for inspiration to write, paint or draw.

School parties are welcomed and throughout their stay will be shown the town by trained supervisors and coordinators. They will also take part in many different types of fun activities available within the town, making new friends as they go. Rooms range from 2 to 10 beds and have en-suites with historical features.

First and best...

This was the first time I had ever stayed in a hostel, and I was so pleased!! It's clean, the staff are friendly, and the location is just INCREDIBLE. The views, the sound of the wind! And you get free tickets to go around the Abbey as well. I highly recommend getting an audio guide when you go around the Abbey, it's really fascinating.

Top Location

The clifftop location of this great YHA right next to the abbey is probably the best in town, and the walk down the 199 well worn steps into the town is lovely. As well as the good quality affordable accommodation you can expect from a YHA hostel, you get free entry to the Abbey when you stay. A big plus for families is the fact that a YHA is one of the few places that doesn't put its prices up in the school holidays!

Bargain beds, brilliant views

If this wasn't a YHA hostel, there would be serious money charged for the best location in town – try room 11, where you throw open the curtains each morning and get an eyeful of the romantic abbey. Three of the rooms have got double beds too, so it's just as good for couples as families.
