This grand hostel has its roots way back in the 12th century when it was referred to as Castle Horneck. Over the centuries, parts were rebuilt and modernised, and now, the mansion offers accommodation for those wanting a budget-friendly holiday close to the Cornish coast. Transformed into a hostel in 1949 and extensively refurbed in 1987, with more improvements made since then, YHA Penzance is just a five-minute drive (half-hour walk) from the Promenade and the same distance from the station.

Sleeping 91 people in total, there are plenty of options to choose from, including shared dorms with bunks and private rooms with a sink housing one to eight across bunks and beds. Each includes lockable storage, bedding and reading lights, and shared showers and toilets are located nearby. Fancy something a bit different? Head outside and opt for a quirky (and waterproof) landpod that sleeps up to four, a premium bell tent with space for five, or bring your own tent and pitch up in the scenic grounds. Back inside the characterful yet modern Grade II-listed hostel, guests can make the most of the shared lounge with a TV and the self-catering kitchen; there's also a restaurant and licensed bar. Oh, it's worth noting that glampers and campers are welcome to use the facilities.

When you're not enjoying the gardens and views towards Mount's Bay, it's all about exploring the beauty of Cornwall. Start by wandering along Chapel Street in Penzance, where you'll find an eclectic mix of shops, as well as the weird and wonderful Egyptian House. Or head to Art Deco Jubilee Pool for a dip in the seawater lido or the geothermally heated pool. There's also plenty of art to discover at Penlee House, The Exchange and Newlyn Gallery. Out and about, Land's End and St Ives are a 20-minute drive away, and you can catch a ferry from Penzance Harbour to the Scilly Isles, if that's the next stop on your trip.
