Just across the bay from St Ives, you may never have come across quite as peaceful and self-contained as three Mile Beach. But this collection of 15 luxury beach houses, bang on the beach in sleepy Gwithian Towans, enjoys about as good a seaside location as you can find in this part of West Cornwall – which really is saying something in one of the busier parts of the UK's favourite coastal county.
Experienced travellers both, owners Craig and Jo work in travel and are used to booking holidays for other people, so you'd expect them to find the best places. Here they've not only done that here but have also designed and built a collection of 15 light and spacious, dog-friendly, luxury holiday homes. Inspired by memories of long sun-drenched Cornish summers, they have created a beach paradise which is as communal or as individual as you want it to be, in a desirable spot on what is by any standards a highly desirable stretch of coast.
Ranging in size from two to four bedrooms, the beach houses all come with an open-plan living area and deep, squishy sofas, a well-equipped kitchen with a double oven and hob, dishwasher and microwave, and guest rooms that have been thoughtfully provided with ultra-comfortable beds and en-suite bathrooms with both showers and bath tubs. Outside, each beach house has a large private decking area with a barbecue, sunken hot tub and a barrel sauna – plus furniture for al fresco dining and lazing. There's a cool Mediterranean vibe throughout, and if the weather is kind you may soon be pinching yourself and wondering whether you're still in the UK!
Finally it's hard to know where to start when it comes to things to do. Craig and Jo chose this place in part because it appealed to their love of the outdoors – they're particularly fond of kite-surfing, which is famously good here. But you could also try regular surfing or sea-kayaking, or maybe just lounge around soaking up the sun – it's a perfect place to switch off and do nothing. If you do get restless, St Ives is just across the bay, and when the delights of St Gwythians begin to pall there are a million other beaches to explore. Plus the South West Coast Path goes right by your door and leads to among other places the excellent Red River Inn in Gwythian.
We'll leave the final word to Craig and Jo: 'Dune cartwheels. Log-burner lounging. Watersport mastering. Cornwall exploring. Starlit feasting. Here, doing nothing and doing everything live together in pure and easy harmony'. Who are we to argue?
