Sizewell
Sizewell Suffolk
A couple of miles out of Leiston, the seaside village of Sizewell is just a handful of houses, once lived in by local fishermen, but its name is known countrywide as the home of two of southern Britain’s largest nuclear power stations, both of which dominate the coastal landscape for miles around. In fact, one of them was de-commissioned in 2006, but the other – the one with the golfball dome – is still very much in service, and they are thinking adding a third. It's a peculiar place, but not as unpleasant as you might think; in fact the beach is lovely here and home to a great beach café, and there's nice campsite set just back from the sea. The coastal path passes right through and a short way along, back towards Thorpeness nineteenth-century Sizewell Hall is a Christian conference an holiday centre that featured as the backdrop to the TV series Lovejoy but is sadly off-limits to the public today.
