Situated amid the quiet beauty of the coasts and heathland of East Suffolk, the hand-built timber lodges at Toad Hall blend in perfectly with their natural surroundings – there's a nature reserve at the end of the road, with cornfields, reed beds and marshes beyond, and an estuary walk that takes you to either Southwold or Walberswick, two of the most charming places on the English coast. You really couldn't be in a better place to slow down, relax and get back to nature.

Best of all, there's no skimping on comfort, with five handsome little lodges, three with king-size double beds, the other two with twins, all with memory foam mattresses, Nespresso coffee machines and bathrobes. One of the doubles, Pebble Lodge, is en-suite, with a shower, toilet and basin. The other four share a separate, heated shower block, with your own private power shower plus toilet, basin and mirror, luxury towels and organic body wash. There are reading lamps and lights inside each lodge, plus sockets and USB ports – there's no wifi but there is a strong 4G signal. French doors open onto your own private wooden deck, where you can enjoy the hand-delivered breakfast basket each morning, and sit and gaze at the stars at night.

Toad Hall is also an ideal venue for groups of up to 10 people, and hosts a range of retreats every year, from yoga retreats (they have a small yoga studio and gym on site) to flower-arranging workshops and cookery classes to cycling weekends, and more. The covered outdoor kitchen has a fridge, gas grill and hob, toaster, kettle and barbecue, and there's a communal fire pit for keeping warm while watching the sunset. Completing the outdoor wellness activities, there's  also an ice bath and a sauna, tucked away at the end of a woodland path, and you can of course walk, run and cycle right from your doorstep.

Southwold is an hour’s walk (or a short car-ride) away, an appealing and rather genteel seaside town that's home to a host of indie shops and cafes,  a terrific pier and some of the country's most expensive beach huts! You can hire bikes, paddle-boards and kayaks, the beach is large and usually not too crowded, and you can even tour the bay by speedboat from Southwold's riverside harbour. Take the nearby foot ferry from here across to Walberswick, a tiny village known for its crabbing festival and a couple of excellent country pubs, The Anchor and The Bell. The nearby village of Wangford also has a couple of pubs serving decent food within easy walking distance. Finally, if festival-life is your thing, it's worth knowing that Toad Hall is just a 20-minute walk from the Latitude site, for which it makes a good base if you book early enough.
