Beautiful self-contained cabins with sea views – just outside Southwold
Set within a private estate on the Suffolk coast, the purpose-built lodges and cabins of Still Southwold offer self-catering stays with their own brand of clifftop cool. The Easton Bavents estate has been in the same family for almost 100 years but luckily for us they decided to share their special spot above the sands, building a series of chic and luxurious self-contained cabins in spectacular locations spaced out along the cliffs, and ranging from sleek beach houses for four people to one-bedroom glass boltholes for couples. They also have a 4-bedroom beach house for rent. But, diverse as they are, there are some things that unite all these properties, and that's their incredible sea views. Each has been carefully designed to make the most of their coastal setting, with bedrooms and terraces all orientated towards the sea – and they all share a powerful sense of being close to nature yet are within easy walking distance of Southwold.
The Easternmost Cabin, a curvy, larch-clad bolthole for two, sits closest to the sea, and furthest from the town, a cosy retreat for two with huge windows for looking out to sea and catching the sunrise. The king-size bedroom has views east and north – again through huge windows towards the deserted beach and cliffs of Covehithe – and a path leads to the beach in two minutes. It's a glorious spot – as comfortable as it is memorable.
A little closer to Southwold, The Watch Room and The Listening Station are beautiful and contemporary shingled two-bedroom cabins with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that very comfortably sleep up to four people. Each of the two double bedrooms has an en-suite bathroom and the central space forms a dinky living and dining area with kitchen that opens onto a decked terrace. As in all these cabins, the kitchen facilities are top-notch and include oven and hob, microwave and dishwasher, and the en-suite bathrooms include powerful showers.
The latest addition is the eye-catching Sea Dragon, Scylla (the first of several), which sleeps two in a super-king-size bed and comes complete with air conditioning and – like all the other cabins, boasts a Sonos sound system, fast WiFi and a Smart TV, and full kitchen and bathroom facilities. The best thing, however, are the sea views that you can enjoy without even getting out of bed!
Whichever you choose, you are only a few minutes’ walk from the sea and an easy walk into Southwold proper. There, you’ll find the town’s unique and rather marvellous pier and its famous beach huts, the opportunity to eat fish and chips and locally-made ice cream and plenty of great pubs, restaurants and shops – just right for a self-catering stay.
