A well-established Southwold restaurant with rooms, Sutherland House occupies one of the town's most historic buildings, indeed James II slept in one of the upstairs bedrooms and its all-round creakiness makes it one of the most characterful places to stay in this genteel resort. It's well located too, bang in the middle of the high street and a short walk away from the seafront and Southwold's wonderful pier; you're also in the thick of the town’s shops, restaurants and pubs.
The building is a quaint old place, full of beams, ornate ceilings and big fireplaces. Yet Sutherland House's 5 rooms boast all the comforts you need, with good tea and coffee, complimentary water and fresh milk in a minibar fridge, Hypnos beds, flatscreen Freeview TVs and good wifi. The top floor room is a large suite, and there are 3 rooms on the first floor, including one small double and a couple with big standalone baths as well as showers, plus a ground floor double with a walk-in shower and its own patio. All of the bathrooms have been recently updated. There’s no parking, but there are plenty of free spaces around town, including some on the street right behind, where you'll also find the main entrance to the rooms and the restaurant's lovely sheltered garden, with its individual booths for diners.
The restaurant itself is a thoroughly desirable place to eat, an intimate beamed room with just 22 covers that was in recently voted one of Tripadvisor's best places for a romantic dinner date for two. Open for dinner only Tuesday–Saturday, they do two sittings, at 6.30pm and 7pm, plus Sunday lunch, and – following a Damascene conversion a couple of years ago (see the framed letter from David Attenborough on the wall) – owners Andy and Kinga now focus the menu on fish and seafood, high-quality local pork (no beef) and plant-based dishes. Expect fine cooking and ingredients, beautiful presentation, and Andy's ebullient front-of-house presence while Kinga is busy in the kitchen. The menu-based breakfast is extra, but worth making the time for – a perfect start to a day in Southwold or exploring the Suffolk Coast.
