Occupying a prime spot in one of Suffolk's best known seaside villages, The Anchor is a bit of an institution – a seaside gastropub with rooms that offers terrific food and drink and a set of comfy rooms in an extremely popular location. Run with enthusiasm by Mark and Sophie Dorber for the past 20 years, it remains a destination coastal dining spot and a terrific place to stay.
Although it remains a pub at heart, most people come to The Anchor for the food, which is served either in the main pub at the front or a dining extension at the back – or in the garden behind the pub if the weather is playing ball (they also fire up their outside pizza oven and barbecue in summer months). Eating here is always good: the menu is focused around local, seasonal ingredients and Sophie’s wonderful homemade bread, with just 4–5 starters, often including selection of Suffolk and Essex oysters, and 4–5 main courses which take in steak, fish and chips, mussels and other seafood, along with a few regularly changing specials.
Mark is something of a beer and wine guru and they have a menu of over 50 bottled beers from around the world and a really interesting wine list, made up of a choice of options by the glass and a larger selection that includes some special bottles curated by Mark with tasting notes to match. Make a visit if you can to Mark and Sophie's other pub, The Swan in Stratford St Mary, down near the Essex border in Constable Country, which has its own microbrewery.
As for the accommodation, there are ten double rooms in total, including four characterful rooms above the pub and six more spacious and contemporary rooms in a set of cedar-clad garden chalets, where they have have super-king-size beds and comfy chairs and/or a sofa. WiFi is good, bathrooms en-suite, and all rooms have tea and coffee-making facilities, water and biscuits. Three of the outside rooms are dog-friendly and there's plenty of space to park your car. Breakfast is served in the pub's dining room and is made up of a small cold buffet and a menu of hot options which includes a good Full English plus seaside favourite like kippers and smoked haddock.
It's a truly relaxing place to stay, and the other big plus is The Anchor's excellent location, overlooking the marshes and a short walk from the beach. Southwold is across the river, accessible by its legendary foot ferry, and Walberswick has a beguiling end-of-the-road feel that belies its celebrity status – Richard Curtis and Emma Freud famously have a house here, and hardly a week goes by without rumours of another celeb either moving to or visiting the village. Chances are you'll bump into one or two of them in the pub!
