It’s said that the poet Dylan Thomas described Mousehole as 'the loveliest village in England'. He honeymooned here in the 1930s and more than 90 years later, this pretty Cornish harbour remains a romantic spot. It’s a reputation that might just be enhanced by the self-catering holiday cottage, Fallen Angel – a romantic bolthole for two with a log burner and views of the rooftops and the sea. But don’t be fooled by talk of yesteryear and imagine a tumbledown fisherman’s cottage. This is cool and contemporary accommodation, where no expense has been spared. The result is an enchanting place for couples to tuck themselves away on the southern Cornish coast.

The carved wooden door that leads into the garden that surrounds the house comes from Morocco, the tiles come from Spain. There’s teak from Malaysia and antiquities from India. But there’s also reclaimed granite from the derelict building this one replaced – and contemporary materials too. Exterior walls are a mixture of black rubber, timber cladding and glass. The architects who built it were asked to 'design the most romantic house' and they’ve certainly come up trumps. Inside, the shower is made for two, the blinds can be opened from the bed and there’s an oversized roll-top bath that looks out to the sea.

Built into the hillside, just 100m from Mousehole Harbour, Fallen Angel is topsy-turvy to make the most of the view. The daytime space is an open-plan kitchen and living room with all the mod cons you could want from a holiday home; things that you don’t always find in places that are just for two. There’s underfloor heating, Sonos speakers, a bespoke kitchen in sandblasted oak and a balcony with glass balustrades that don’t interrupt the vista. To reach the bedroom and its en-suite bathroom, you descend through a stair tunnel that’s as interesting as everything else in this place. You feel, here, that everything has been chosen with thought and care.

It’s this, as well as the location, that makes it a special spot; one that’s ripe for proposals, honeymoons and anniversary stays. It’s even used for elopement weddings. The sub-tropical gardens that surround it are the perfect backdrop for that. And whether you tie the knot here or elsewhere, today or at another time altogether, perhaps after dinner, you’ll be moved to take a romantic stroll down on the beach. Maybe you’ll even be tempted to have a drink at The Ship Inn as Dylan Thomas and his newly-wed wife once did.
