If it's a stretch to think of anywhere in the UK as resembling savannah or prairie, the North Norfolk coast comes closest, with its majestically flat landscape and never-ending skies. Wild Luxury's safari lodges do their bit too, providing a brilliant base for friends and family to explore the beaches, walks and bike rides that make this part of England so alluring.

The canvas lodges are spread across two private camps, three miles apart but both handy for the coast. Thornham Bay is closest to the beach – a 25-minute walk away – and there's a 'Pamper Box' make-up station, farm shop and cafe, upscale fish and chip bar, restaurant, and fish smokery on site. It's great if you're looking for a bit of sophistication, while being able to get out and about easily. Meanwhile, The Hideaway is more family-oriented and tucked a bit further inland – a 15-minute drive to the beach – with a children's play area (swings, slides, hammocks etc) plus a woodland adventure area with zip-line and plenty of places for den-building. The kids can really roam free here, without any worries.

As for the accommodation, think luxury safari in style, with open-plan living areas with sofas, fully fitted kitchens, private bathroom with power-shower, wood-burner and extensive decking. They are warm and cosy, well-lit, and equipped with everything you need, inside and out, from wine glasses to firepits. The Serengeti lodges (eleven at Thornham Bay, five at The Hideaway) sleep up to six in a combo of doubles, twins and bunks. At The Hideaway, there are also two Zambezi lodges, huge outfits that can sleep up to ten people in three doubles and two twins. Larger groups can book adjacent lodges for a real safari-style holiday under the big old skies of Norfolk. Meanwhile a summer-only 'Wild Camp' near Thornham Bay has five fully serviced bell-tents and tons of facilities within walking distance of a sandy beach. There's no WiFi at any of the camps, but the 4G signal is good enough hereabouts.

The whole of North Norfolk is right on your doorstep, starting with Thornham village and its old pubs, and miles of beautiful coastline to explore. Seaside fun at Hunstanton, the harbour of Wells-Next-The-Sea, the sands and dunes at Holkham, royal Sandringham, cycling or walking on Peddars Way or the coast path – it's hard to beat this part of England on a sunny day, and you can see why people come on safari – sorry, holiday – here year after year.

Facilities

You can hire bikes for all ages, as well as child seats, on booking – just remember to bring your own helmets. No cars are allowed in the field, except for unpacking/packing up, so it’s incredibly safe. There are nature walks from the site, and plenty of space for kite flying and family games. Kids will love making friends with the guinea pigs and collecting eggs from the chickens. If none of those appeals, never underestimate the fun to be had in a purple wheelbarrow (you’ll find several around the site). Seven luxury safari lodges are set in a fenced-off field in the middle of working farmland. Each lodge can sleep up to 6, with a double bed, bunk beds and a cute double bed in a cupboard… it’s better than it sounds, trust us. All linen and towels are rentable. There is a wood-burning range in the kitchen and your day’s allocation of firewood is supplied. There’s also a double gas hob if you can’t wait for the range to heat up before you have your morning brew. All cookware and tableware is provided, and there’s a massive coolbox for your fresh food. Indulge in local sausages and bacon from the ‘Wild Cooler’ or stock up on essentials in the treasure trove that is the honesty pantry. You can even place orders for newspapers and fresh bread the day before.

Suitable For

Families, couples, groups, single-sex parties (providing they take over all 5 lodges), dogs on leads – yes. Tents, campervans, caravans – no.

Nearby

We have never seen such a comprehensive welcome pack as the one you’re presented with here, so don’t worry for a moment about being stuck for things to do/see/eat/wear/watch/touch/sit on… A selection: North Norfolk is home to beautiful beaches galore – try Brancaster, Holme and Holkham just for starters. Pensthorpe nature reserve and gardens (01328 851465) hosts the BBC’s Springwatch and is home to numerous bird species and other wildlife for a day out with new feathered friends.

Food & Drink

It’s great fun to cook at camp, either indoors on the range, or why not have a barbecue on the campfire outside? If you want a night off, there are loads of options just a short drive away. The Rose and Crown (01485 541382) in Snettisham is a proper local pub, which serves delicious food with a local slant. For something a little upmarket, head to the award-winning Orange Tree (01485 512213) in Thornham – it’s a culinary force to be reckoned with. Don’t let the X Factor-style flames outside put you off, the service is outstanding, the food local and innovative and the children’s menu is something else!

The Owner Says

Two award-winning beautifully tranquil luxury camps right on the Norfolk coast. The Hideaway has acres of open space, fantastic for young families and romantic couples. Thornham Bay camp  is right down by the beach and a short stroll to a farm and craft shops, yurt bistro, restaurants, local deli and 3 great pubs.

All lodges are warm and cosy with master as well as twin or bunk bedrooms and also our very popular sleeping cupboard with ample room for two (or more!). There is also dining and living areas, sun deck and your own flushing loo and hot shower within the lodge. Kitchens are fitted with a wood-burning range cooker, cool-box, kitchen sink, dresser and a gas stove. Lodges are well-spaced and we will arrange adjacent accommodation if travelling in a group.

Everything you will need for your stay down to cutlery and utensils is provided. All lodges have electric lighting and an initial supply of candles. Cooking and heating is provided by wood-burning ranges that make our lodges warm and cosy.

As a family holiday destination, Norfolk fits the bill perhaps better than any other English county. Its long, sandy coast provides ample opportunities for days at the beach; the abundant wildlife can be explored by boat; and cycling through the picturesque landscape of undulating fields, flint cottages and salt marshland is gentle thanks to the flat terrain.

As if that's not enough, the coast is dotted with grand stately homes, ruined castles, quaint country pubs and lovely cafes. As a major area for visitors there are great days out from Bewilderwood and the Dinasaur Park to seal trips or visit all the favourite rides at the fair!
