Pells Pool
At the junction of Brook St and St John's Hill, Lewes East Sussex BN7 2BA
If you’re visiting Lewes this summer, make sure you chuck your swimming
stuff into your bag, just in case. On a hot day there’s nowhere nicer to be than
the Pells Pool, Lewes’s community-run, spring-fed outdoor pool, which proudly
claims to be the oldest freshwater pool in the country – it
celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2011. It’s a lovely spot, with
a big tree-lined lawn edging the 46-metre-long pool, plus a paddling pool for
little ones, and a stall serving home-baked goodies. There’s no denying the
water can be somewhat, er… bracing, and
in the school holidays the place is absolutely heaving; but if you time it right you
can have the pool virtually to yourself. Bliss.
