The Falmouth is a classic seaside hotel that deserves its reputation as the “Grande Dame” of the southern Cornish town it stands in. She’s weathered more than 150 years overlooking Castle Beach and Pendennis Point and retains plenty of Victorian charm – but, thanks to a recent renovation, she’s wearing her age rather well. Here, you can stay in style and seaside splendour in one of 71 comfortable rooms and suites. You can indulge in the time-honoured tradition of afternoon tea in the hotel’s mature gardens, relax with a modern treatment in the spa and sip cocktails before dinner in the dining room downstairs.
The property was added to the select Cornwall Hotel Collection portfolio in 2024, meaning it has returned to local ownership for the first time in two decades. This boutique group, which includes The Greenbank in Falmouth and The Alverton in Truro, wasted no time introducing their signature style to this iconic place to stay. That means you can expect warm hospitality from the staff and a warm finish to the rooms, too. History is respected but fresh interior design is bringing the hotel right up-to-date, with refurbishment of the shared spaces – swimming pool, spa, dining room and lounges – expected to complete by summer 2025.
Up the sweeping staircase, there are a range of bedrooms and suites which have played host over the decades to all manner of guests from dignitaries to dogs, who continue to be welcome here with Fido-friendly rooms as well as family suites, all with the usual inclusions from TV to toiletries. The best rooms, of course, are on the sea-view side offering incredible vistas of the Celtic Sea beyond the rock pools and sand of Castle Beach, which is just across the road. Family-friendly Gyllyngvase Beach is also just a few minutes' walk away.
It’s no wonder this spot was chosen for Falmouth’s first purpose-built hotel. You can holiday like a well-to-do Victorian and enjoy what’s here and on the doorstep: the sea, sand, promenade, restaurant and bar. Or you can use this as a base to explore more of Falmouth’s many treasures – the harbour, National Maritime Museum and Tudor Pendennis Castle, not to mention the rest of southern Cornwall, east and west of here.
