The Ship Inn
Gonvena Hill Wadebridge Cornwall PL27 6DF
A traditional 16th century boozer, The Ship Inn is one of the oldest pubs in the market town of Wadebridge. Being just a few miles from Padstow it can be tough to lure the custom from Cornwall’s nearby foodie Mecca, but The Ship Inn is definitely worth a jaunt down the Camel Trail to check out. Having retained a traditional ambience, with nautical memorabilia and sepia-toned photographs harking back to a time when Wadebridge was a significant port town, this isn’t just a welcoming spot for a quenching Cornish ale by the fire or outside on the decking. As well as wines made in the nearby Camel Valley, gin distilled in Cornwall and apple juice from the region’s orchards, there’s the beckoning of simple, honest pub food: from homemade scotch eggs and ploughmans made with Cornish cheddar and homemade chutney, to hearty belly pork served with onion sauce and mash. There’s also a Little Ship Mates menu (served from the family-friendly time of 5pm) and a toy-box to keep kids amused while you soak up the ambience and hospitality.
