Contemporary, cool and full of Cornish character, this expertly renovated manor house is a stand-out place to stay near Padstow on the north coast of Cornwall. With 12 bedrooms, sleeping up to 26 people, it’s a great place to escape to with a large group of family or friends. And all of them will be impressed by the standards on offer here. It’s been carefully designed to honour the building’s 18th-century heritage, but also to make sure that 21st-century guests are happy. That means Miele appliances sit next to Cornish slate walls in the kitchen and king-size beds offer a place to sleep under exposed timber beams.
Almost all of the bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, and the two that don't have a bathroom nearby. This makes the living here easy and relaxed. The shared spaces help, too. There are five reception rooms as well as an outdoor space with a fire pit, hot tub and an outdoor kitchen featuring a pizza oven and barbecue. There’s plenty of room both to spread out and to come together. And, as an additional talking point, if your adventures around north Cornwall aren’t enough, there’s a changing, curated exhibition of artwork on the walls!
It’s one of a growing handful of ARC holiday homes that aim to bring people together in English country houses that have been reimagined for today. The work, done by the architects and creatives who own them, is evident everywhere – from the careful preservation of character features to the addition of modern furniture and flourishes. ARC also helps you curate your stay through their innovative online Lobby service, which puts you in touch with local businesses that will help you plan dinners, drinks, days in and days out – though to be honest, there's no shortage of inspiration.
ARC Padstow is located in St Issey, a small settlement a 30-minute walk outside Padstow. There’s a pub at the end of the road and a restaurant within walking distance, but it’s Padstow and the seven bays around it that’ll prove the biggest draw. The sea and the seafood of this part of north Cornwall are legendary and it’s all within easy reach. You can drive 10 minutes to town or cycle or walk on the traffic-free Camel Trail. At the trail’s other end is Bodmin Moor, less than 20 miles away, and closer than that is the surf of Polzeath and the castle at Tintagel. Oh, and something to keep in mind: ARC has a fabulous sister property in Painswick, should the Cotswolds be on your list of places to visit.
