Windermere might be the busiest of the lakes but you wouldn't know it at fabulous Low Wray, the National Trust's serene woodland and waterfront campsite that lies on the western shore, three miles south of Ambleside. The car gets put into storage straight away, since you can bike and hike straight from the site to all manner of local beauty spots and attractions – enticing Wray Castle is only a short walk away, for example, and there are boat connections to to both Ambleside and Bowness. Prime pitches are the lakeside ones (you'll pay a small premium for these), but the whole set-up is pretty idyllic. Facilities are excellent and ever-improving, from newly refurbished toilets and showers to a gourmet meal van that rocks up in school holidays and at weekends to supply you with dry-cured bacon rolls, artisan burgers and the like. There's also tons of stuff for the children to do, from orienteering course to play area. You can book in advance now too – and in school holidays you'd be advised to do so, as this is one of the Lakes' most popular campsites.
