We don't often recommend self-catering properties that are part of larger complex, but in the case of Footprints Lodge we thought we'd make an exception. For a start, the location is a beauty, in an attractive and secluded woodland setting that is just footsteps away from the shores of Lake Windermere. Also it's large for a wooden cabin – with three good-sized bedrooms, one of them en-suite, so is perfect for a big family or bunch of friends.
Owner Sharron Clark has put quite a bit of thought and effort into making the lodge a home from home. The decor is bright and contemporary, and there's a large triple-aspect sitting room with an outside deck, and a fully fitted kitchen with dishwasher and microwave – there's also Freeview TV and DVD player, iPod docking station and a hot tub on the deck outside. And Sharron herself is a mine of information on what to do and where to eat and drink in the surrounding area.
You also have access to all the facilities of the White Cross Bay resort on which the lodge is situated, which include an indoor swimming pool, sauna and gym, a restaurant and bar and a marina, so real lazybones need never set foot outside the park. This would be a pity, though, as you couldn't be in a better place to walk, cycle and generally enjoy the best of this magical bit of the Lake District. At the very least though explore the lake – either by following the 10-mile-long Windermere Way, which passes right by the lodge, or by taking a trip on one of the Windermere Lake Cruises. In short, it's a great place for a family holiday.
