This glorious country house dates back to the late 19th century when it was built as a hunting lodge for a certain Lord Lonsdale – a colourful character, in every sense of the word, who appropriately enough was responsible for the distinctive yellow livery of the AA. These days the hotel is known for its excellent food and very comfortable rooms, indeed from the moment you swing into the driveway you will know that you have found a perfect place to stay: the wood panelled reception area is cosy and inviting and the views down over Windermere are magnificent. The rooms themselves are crisp, modern and decorated using natural fabrics to create a comforting, cosy, feel; there's an onsite spa offering a vast array of head to toe treatments to rid you of the stresses of modern life, and the restaurant boasts a memorable fine dining experience.
Holbeck Ghyll may be the ideal place for a romantic weekend away, but it's a dog-friendly venue too, with extensive grounds that are doggy heaven. Dogs are welcome in the lodges, each of which boasts either a balcony or small terrace area, stunning views down over Windermere to the fells in the distance, and a bowl, bed and treat to welcome and settle your dog. Several rooms also have a porch area for cleaning muddy dogs, and muddy boots after long waggy-tailed adventures in the fells, plus a torch for any late night excursions.
The main bar area is smart, with oversized sofas and large armchairs to relax down into as you enjoy a pre-dinner drink, and your four-legged friend is welcome to join you there until 6pm. Although dogs are not permitted into the dining area, you can make arrangements for dinner, and breakfast, to be served in your room so you can all dine together. The staff are also quite happy for dogs to be left alone in their rooms but just ask that you let the housekeeping staff know.
All in all, it's hard to imagine a much better location for a romantic weekend in the country, whether you have a dog or not.
