Rye Castle Museum
3 East Street Rye TN31 7JY
This place goes hand in hand with the Ypres Tower experience. The tower has the bricks and mortar while the museum houses all the contents from the long and sometimes troubled history of the town, including its periodic visits by the French. There are some oddities too, such as Rye’s 18th-century fire engine – and, of course, an ever-changing rota of temporary exhibitions. Top Tip: check in advance for interesting talks or demonstrations at the museum, speakers of the past have included leading actors and actresses with the Royal Shakespeare Company, famous authors and leading professors, and of course some of the museums own curators.
