Overlooking the the platform at Northiam – a stop on the popular Kent & East Sussex Railway – Railway Retreats gives you the chance to sleep in your very own converted railway carriage, right up close to the track of a working heritage railway. It’s a unique place to stay, and is definitely more of a first-class than a third-class experience: all six of the carriages and wagons on offer have been completely restored and brought into the 21st century with style. Sleeping between 2 and 6, the range of options make it a great choice for a romantic retreat as well as for young families, not only because... hey... you’re staying on a train, but also because it’s an excellent base to explore his part of Kent and East Sussex.
The first arrival at Railway Retreats was the beautifully converted 'Plum and Custard’ train carriage which sleeps up to 6 in comfort, with a fully functional kitchen, an open-plan lounge and dining area and a glass balcony for an elevated view of the steam railway and the surrounding countryside. Of 2 double bedrooms, one has an en-suite bathroom, plus there’s a bunk bedroom for kids (complete with Dennis the Menace wallpaper), and a family bathroom. The most recent addition to the yard is the 'Emerald Express', a 1939 newspaper wagon which has been given a classy contemporary makeover. Perfect for young families, it features an open plan kitchen and living area, shower room, double bedroom and a second bedroom with handy double / single bunk bed which sleeps three. Completing the fleet are four more vans and wagons which sleep between 2 and 5 in comfort, all with their own bathrooms, kitchen facilities and private outdoor space.
The most obvious way explore the area is on the railway itself, whose steam trains run to Bodiam – and its magnificent castle in one direction – and in the other to Tenterden in Kent, home of the Chapel Down vineyard. The magnificent gardens at Great Dixter are also within walking distance from Northiam Station. Plus you're also just a short drive away from the Go Ape centre at Bedgebury, a little way north, and to the south the coast at Rye and Camber Sands. Fancy a bite to eat? The White Hart in is just a 10-minute walk from the property, over the River Rother, and does good pub grub, while the brilliant Sahebs Indian is a short stroll away in the other direction.
