As you wind your way into 13-century Dew Farm, you’ll notice ancient woodland, fruit trees and roaming livestock – and of course, carefully planted rows of vines, because it’s also home to Tillingham winery. And that’s not all: the former hop barn has 11 characterful guest rooms, there’s an on-site restaurant and bar, and an outdoor Dutch barn dishing up pizzas, plus a striking oast house storing earthenware vessels – Qvevri – where grapes are left to ferment.
Just a 10-minute drive from Rye, the owner of the totally renovated 70-acre organic farmstead – Ben Walgate – has a progressive philosophy, using science and technology while championing sustainability and historic traditions to create a highly-regarded selection of natural wines. Be sure to book a tour and tasting guided hosted by one of the passionate vintners before heading back to the main building for lunch – a concise set menu offering the likes of heritage tomato gazpacho and day boat fish meuniere with pink fir potatoes.
If you’re staying over, don’t miss the evening ‘Garden Menu’, a seasonal six-course affair. Showcasing vegetables and meat grown and reared onsite and seafood from Rye Harbour, enjoy your meal in the contemporary upstairs dining space while admiring the gorgeous scenery. For something more casual, order a woodfired sourdough pizza in the Dutch barn, where toppings range from Beal’s chorizo and shallots to goat’s cheese, pesto, chilli and walnuts. Either way, wash your tasty food down with a glass or two of Tillingham’s wine, ranging from Athingmill NV, a 70-component floral white to their blood orange-hued rosé.
When it comes to rooms, choose from ‘Standard’, ‘Large’ or ‘Feature’ – some have super king-size beds and freestanding baths, while others have kings or doubles and large walk-in showers. All are uber-stylish, with Roberts radios (no TVs, but you definitely won’t mind), vibrant artwork and glorious estate views. If you’re up for a slightly more rustic option, go for a high-spec bell tent, complete with a double bed and wood-burning stove.
Out and about, head to picturesque Rye and wander the cobbled roads, including medieval Mermaid Street with its antique shops, or explore the nearby Nature Reserve, before popping into one of the dinky town’s many pubs – we like The George Inn and Waterworks Micropub for local craft beers and ciders. Meanwhile, Camber Sands is 20 minutes from Tillingham – one of the UK’s finest (and widest) beaches.
