Looking Glass Lodge appears to float suspended above the leaf litter of a woodland, a few miles from Hastings on the East Sussex coast. It’s a high-end, self-catering eco-lodge on the edge of a nature reserve which provides true tranquillity for two. You have this place entirely to yourselves, with Mother Nature your only neighbour. This striking creation invites its lodgers to truly immerse themselves in the stunning sylvan surroundings without intruding too far on it. You eat, sleep and relax in this intentionally sleek, chic and minimalist cabin with its breathtaking views of this woodland oasis.
This is made easy by the design of the place, which has given it front and back walls of floor-to-ceiling glass. And it’s not just any glass, but electrochromic glass which darkens at dusk for privacy and to protect wildlife from light pollution, while still letting you have a view. It’s part of the clever eco-friendly, biophilic design that has won a RIBA South East Award for Small Project of the year, Sussex Heritage Trust Award and a place on George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces.
While the long sides of the cabin are glass, the rest is clad in cedar. Neat lines of it run inside as well as out providing continuity from the back deck where you enter to the open plan living space. What’s beyond the opposite window immediately wows you but what’s inside is pretty special too. A cosy sofa corner with a floating log burner, a kitchen island you’d like to have at home. Beyond a wall of kitchen cabinets is the combined bedroom and bathroom with a statement white stone pebble bath.
Rik and Lindsey, who built the place, are strongly rooted in their community and have kitted the lodge out with toiletries and homeware from the local area as far as possible. They can supply you with a hamper of local goodies, upon request, and they're brimming with local recommendations, such as a meal at The Cove, a walk in the nearby country park or a stroll around Hastings Old Town. There’s the beach for swimming and the medieval town of Rye to explore. But the truth is, Lindsey tells us, many people come with the intention of exploring, but once here can’t bear to leave for the duration of their stay. An enviable problem if ever there was one.
