Winner of the 2024 Prestige Awards Accommodation of the Year, Gensing Lodge offers self-catering stays in St Leonards-on-Sea, a place that’s riding the wave of creativity that’s swept along the South Coast in recent years. There’s an excitement in this seaside town that’s very much mirrored in this holiday maisonette, whose careful renovation celebrates the Victorian history of the building as gleefully as it does the town and the growing community of creatives who live there. The result is a place to stay that’s as interesting as what’s outside, with all the modern conveniences you need from a holiday home. And all this is just a few minutes’ walk from the sea.

There are Smart TVs in the open-plan living room and the master bedroom upstairs. The kitchen and bathroom are modern and well-equipped, with nods to the building’s past via fixtures, fittings and retro tiles. There’s a similar feel in the three double bedrooms, where metal-framed beds complement the property's original features – cornicing, ceiling roses and fireplaces. This, mixed with contemporary art on display, makes the apartment a stand-out place to stay by the seaside.

There’s something to look at on every wall of the holiday home but the artworks that really take your breath away are out in the hall. There’s a mural of Japanese goldfish swimming up the stairwell and an art deco-style stained glass window that shines a kaleidoscope of colours on the wall. Accompanying information about the artists who’ve contributed pieces to the property is displayed gallery-style. If you enjoy the creativity of the place, you’ll also love sister property, The Church Retreat, another award-winning self-catering apartment sleeping six, 10 minutes’ walk away.

Both are lovely spaces, but Gensing Lodge is perhaps best located for those who like to be in the heart of things. Step outside the two-floor property and within a minute you're on Norman Road and in central St Leonards. Cafes, antique and vintage shops, galleries and the town’s restored historic cinema, Kino-Teatr, line the way towards the shingle shore. Settle down on it, take a swim or walk along to the equally vibrant centre of Hastings, just over a mile away.
