Once upon a time, hop-picking holidays in Kent gave Londoners a chance to get out of the city and into the countryside – with plenty of fresh air and lots of camaraderie. The hops may have gone but the distinctive oast houses, which were used for drying the harvest, remain. One of them, Horne’s Place Oast, has been converted to provide some of the most beautiful holiday accommodation you'll find in the county – a glorious 10-bedroom oasis of calm, just a few miles from the sea at Camber Sands.
Sleeping up to 25, it’s a sociable space in a rural setting, offering some of the advantages of the holidays of yesteryear but none of the hard work. Indeed the emphasis here is on complete relaxation, with a 10m x 4m heated indoor swimming pool, two hot tubs, a games room and an interior that provides modern country living while retaining a country-cottage feel, with bright spacious rooms, exposed beams and a large inglenook fireplace.
There are no less than 10 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms, simply decorated with a fresh, contemporary feel; 7 of the bedrooms are in the oast house itself, while the rest, all with en suite bathrooms, are in a neighbouring barn, just across a small courtyard. The barn has its own kitchen and dining room so there is plenty of space, but the main kitchen-dining room in the oast house is very much the heart of the place, perfect for group meals and big, celebratory dinners – and when the sun is shining there’s enough space for everyone to eat outside on the deck overlooking the pond and garden, where you can also make use of a built-in barbecue or wood-fired pizza oven.
Inside, there's a comfy sitting room with an open fire, a Smart TV with a Sky package, an extended living room with a big screen and projector and wood-burning stove so guests can really spread out, and a games room with table football and pool, plus a hot tub – perfect for a long soak at the end of the day. In a separate building, the pool is heated and has separate showers and changing rooms and a second hot tub.
We wouldn't blame you if you chose to spend most of your time at Horne's Place, but if you want to get out and about it's worth knowing that there's loads to see and do in this corner of Kent. Horne’s Place Oast & Barn is on the outskirts of the village of Appledore, between Romney Marsh and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The hop fields which used to surround it have been replaced by vineyards and Gusbourne’s Winery and Tasting Room is a cross-country walk of less than a mile away. In the other direction is the village with its pub, tea room and shop. The beach at Camber Sands is about 10 miles away, with the historic town of Rye just beyond, while inland you could head for Tenterden and more vineyards, and the Kent & East Sussex Railway, which you can take from Tenterden to the wonderful medieval castle at Bodiam.
