Just outside town, the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is an area of salt marsh, shingle and dune that has enjoyed a protected status since 1970, and it’s a great place to walk or spot wildlife. You can follow its network of footpaths and stop off at one of the bird-watching hides. Keen twitchers should make sure they bring a guide to the marsh birds and waders of the British shoreline along with their bins. Or just enjoy the walk and views along the coastline and back up to the skyline of downtown Rye.
