We love its sister hotel, The Pig in the New Forest, so naturally when staying over night in Southampton, we often choose the the Pig in the Wall. Built into the city walls, it has been converted and decorated in the same stylish way as its country sister, with a shabby-chic vibe and comfy contemporary rooms that sport top-of-the-range mod cons, such as Nespresso machines and super-powerful showers – and glamorous roll top baths in some of the larger rooms. The downstairs bar/lounge is a comfortable, relaxing space where you can hole up on a cosy sofa up in front of the fire with an apple bellini or two. It also serves delicious local cheese and charcuterie platters, tasty quiches and a variety of salads and bar goodies – try a slice of the wonderful homemade sausage and garlic roll – all at very reasonable prices. The staff are friendly and efficient and it makes a great place for lunch if you're shopping – John Lewis and Southampton's main shops are just a five-minute walk away. If you’re after a more substantial meal, the hotel provides residents with free Land Rover transfers to their highly recommended sister restaurant in the New Forest.
