The Bulls Head - Strand on the Green
15 Strand on the Green Chiswick London W4 3PQ
There is a very popular and charming walk that takes you along the river in Chiswick that starts in a bend in the road at Strand on the Green and up to Kew Bridge. It is popular with Sunday strollers, dog walkers, tourists, runners and cyclists, so there is always plenty going on. Along this stretch are three pubs, and the Bull's Head is the first if you come from the Grove Park end. The beauty of it is the location: despite the fact that it is right next to a railway bridge and the planes can hammer overhead, it's easy to forget you are even in London as you sip your pint or dunk your chips – and the cackling of the Canadian and the Egyptian geese often drown out other noises. You can gaze out at Oliver's Island opposite, or admire the rowers or canoeists and even the sailing boats that potter about on this stretch. And if you want to stretch your legs you can always wander down to Kew Bridge and admire the unique properties that come at a price that only Russian oligarchs can afford. The pub itself is made up of little cubby spaces and so is also cosy in the winter. The food is traditional without being remarkable – we are talking fish and chips, steak and ale pies and maybe a roast on Sunday. It's the place that's cool.
