A Victorian pub on the edge of Smithfield Market that has reinvented itself as a gastro-pub, with six luxury rooms upstairs. It’s not just a few rooms above a boozer, though; the rooms are superb, and very well-equipped, with flatscreen TVs, DVD players and Bose sound systems, while bathrooms have claw-footed roll-top baths and copper hand basins. Each is locally themed, with St Bart’s and the Market Suite on the first floor, Charterhouse and St Paul’s on the second and Smithfield and Barbican at the top. There’s a butchery theme too – look out for the lengths of butcher’s chain mail used as an alternative lamp shade – and the Market Suite has a private decked terrace. Don’t forget to nip downstairs to the wood-panelled mahogany bar to enjoy a pint and some of the traditional meaty dishes on the menu, including the excellent and enormous ‘City Boy Breakfast’ (meals are not included in the accommodation cost). The pub is also connected to the nearby Malmaison London.
