On a pedestrianised little square just footsteps from the Royal Opera House, the independent Fielding Hotel feels rather peaceful. Offering lower prices than other hotels in the vicinity, it’s more functional than luxurious, but it’s safe, clean and friendly, and wins a lot of repeat custom (it’s a favourite with performers at the nearby theatres and the opera house). Rooms vary in size and decor – don’t necessarily expect masses of space, or fancy furnishings – but even the simplest options are comfortable, clean and a fair enough size. There’s no breakfast, or bar, but you are so near the heart of things here that it shouldn’t be a problem. Be warned, though, that there is no lift – part of the charm of some old London buildings, but not so great if you’re loaded up with luggage. Wi-fi is available.
