Guildford Arms
55 Guildford Grove Greenwich London SE10 8JY
This pub on the fringes of Greenwich that was transformed a few years ago by chef Guy Awford, who cooks good Modern British food in what is honestly more of a restaurant than a gastro pub – in atmosphere, style of food and most crucially price. The men changes monthly, and will often include a burger or a steak but is just as likely to feature pricier and more ambitious fare – though the emphasis is always on hearty, traditional British choices, made with seasonal, high-quality ingredients. They serve a simpler bar menu, a good value midweek lunch menu and Sunday lunch is focused more on gastropubby fare and roasts. It's nicely done inside, but there's a garden for sunny days, and service is invariably excellent. Inside, just down the road, is under the same ownership.
