On the water's edge at Falmouth Harbour, The Greenbank is a real crowd-pleaser with class. Originally built in 1640, it's the town's oldest hotel, with uninterrupted panoramas of the harbour from both rooms and their restaurant, The Water’s Edge – ideal for a relaxing coastal break. It's part of the local Cornwall Hotel Collection, which also owns its beachside sister, The Falmouth on the other side of town, and The Alverton in nearby Truro. Like those hotels, it has a welcoming and comfortable charm that suits its heavenly waterside location perfectly.

The location could hardly be better, and they have a range of guest rooms from Classic to Deluxe, some of which are dog-friendly. The best rooms make the most of it – not just sea vistas and ocean-inspired colour schemes, but king-size beds, private balconies, decent bathrooms and – in the Florence Suite at least – harbour views from your roll-top bath. Two suites have private balconies, and it's just fabulous drawing back the curtains for another glistening glimpse of the sea in the morning. While some of the more affordable rooms may not have water views, it's worth asking if that's a priority.

The Water's Edge restaurant offers uninterrupted estuary outlooks, so you can always feast your eyes on scenic Falmouth Harbour before tucking into sumptuous food from the two AA Rosette menu, on which fish and seafood feature highly. The terrace bar has slots of waterside appeal too, and there's also a pub – The Working Boat – for bar meals and Sunday lunches. The Greenbank is only a few footsteps from Falmouth's busy town centre, so all in all, it's the perfect place from which to explore South Cornwall's most historic resort and port. It's also the only hotel in the southwest to boast its own quay and private pontoons, meaning if you simply have to travel here on your own yacht, you'll be fine.
