The Black Lion is located at the far end of the riverside promenade in Hammersmith and is a pub with both cultural and culinary ambitions. It’s run by Buzz Cousins – a man who describes himself as quintessentially Kiwi – and its emphasis is on rugby, food and wine. From the outside this looks like any other pub., with white walls, black painted timber, hanging flower baskets and a spacious riverside beer garden, but there’s more to Buzz's Black Lion than meets the eye, with a great selection of NZ wines and some excellent Kiwi-inspired food food, including Kiwi fish and chips (with mussels and pineapple), Kiwi pies and Kiwi burgers (with beetroot, naturally); they also grill some fabulous steaks and chops on the their 'Big Bertha' closed barbecue and regularly host a hangi – a traditional Maori way of preparing food using heated rocks. Their kids menu will sensibly appeal to most little ones, so, will the garden as well. It's a decent place to bring the family, and just to show it's not all about New Zealand, they've reopened the pub's old skittles alley.
