You couldn't find a much cooler place to stay in London than this Whitechapel hotel, which sits just half a mile from the City of London, yet also has a boho look and feel that's a million miles away from the suits of the Square Mile. There's nothing quite like its playful, ultra-colourful public spaces and rooms, plus it claims to be the capital's 'greenest hotel', with a range of sustainable stats that give you yet another reason to stay here. That, and the affordable prices.
Those sustainable features include the usual LED lighting and use of local suppliers, but they also extend to water-saving showers, sustainable matresses and a bunch of rooftop solar panels contributing to energy efficiency. The rooms themselves are bright, white and deliberately functional, with in-your-face murals and boldly coloured feature walls. You can choose from a windowless and extremely cosy 'Snug' room to a slightly larger 'Comfy' room, which comes with windows, and the top-end 'Plush' room, which include a sofa bed as well as the standard super-king-size bed, bathroom with rainfall shower, eco-friendly toiletries, air-conditioning, Smart TV, and complimentary water - with tea and coffee facilities available on each landing. There are a few accessible rooms available, too.
Downstairs, there's a deliberately flexible cafe and restaurant that's much more East London than City of London, serving a sustainably sourced vegan right through from 12 noon to the evening. There's also a 24/7 bar for thirsty folk and party animals. Perhaps best of all, though, are the prices, which are extremely keen, and the location - handy for the City, Brick Lane and the nightlife of Spitalfields and Shoreditch, as well as key London sights like the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and the river.
