The English Restaurant
50/52 Brushfield Street Spitalfields London E1 6AG
The English Restaurant, sitting opposite the glitzy extension to Spitalfields Market, is one of a number of places here that appear to have come straight out of the Georgian past. The handpainted signage and a wood-panelled interior give instant old-world glamour, and the menu matches up, with old-fashioned English favourites such as whitebait, oysters, Dover sole, steak sandwiches and bread pudding. Or try a traditional breakast of kippers, bubble and squeak or fried egg sandwich. While some people might find the archaic styling a bit too self-conscious, it’s an undeniably attractive place, and live jazz in the evenings adds to the atmosphere.
