Princess of Wales
1A Montpelier Row Blackheath London SE3 0RL
Like most pubs these days, The Princess of Wales serves food, but you don't necessarily come where to eat what is at best decent pub grub and sometimes not even that. Instead, this is a good local pub in a great heathside location that is a lovely cosy spot in winter and a fabulously popular hangout in summer, when the throng on the heath outside gives it the feel of a local free festival without the music. There's a small garden out the back, and usually a decent choice of real ales on tap inside, where the choice of seating areas encompass squashy sofas around the fire and a bright and sunny conservatory. What's more, dogs are positively encouraged, so you can walk your mutt on the heath and pop in here afterwards for a restorative pint and a dog biscuit (they serve both). They also run quiz nights and do a reasonable roast on Sundays.
