Blackout has been quietly selling quirky vintage clothing in Covent Garden for around twenty years, starting out long before retro gear became hip. There are two floors, crammed to the rafters with used clothing for men and women, dating back to the 1920s right up to the 1980s. The 1950s cocktail frocks are perennial winners, but some of the best finds are among the accessories – nippy hats with peekaboo veils, wonderful 60s shoes, Art Deco Bakelite jewellery, and a very fine selection of handbags. Prices aren’t low, but then again, you are in central London, and the range is very good. It’s a great spot to pop in and look for a one-off treasure that you can’t resist, although for cheap staples you might do better in your local vintage store.
