Emirates Airline
Cutter Lane Greenwich, London SE10 OER
Opened just in time for the Olympics in 2012, the Emirates Air Line does it best to bring north and south London closer together with this ten-minute cable car journey from Greenwich Peninsula to the redeveloped Royal Docks on the other side. If we're honest both sides suffer a bit from being new and relatively recently developed, and it's easy to wonder why you bothered as you step off into the sparsely populated streets of the north side especially. But it's a fab way to reach the O2 on the south side of the river, no question, and plentiful buses run from nearby North Greenwich station to the town centre and the park and up the hill to Blackheath. On the north side the Excel exhibition centre is the main focus, and there's usually something on, while the journey itself is most spectacular at night when the cable cars are picked out in red and the views across Canary Wharf and London beyond are spectacular – and hey, you don't even have to get off if you don't want to (though it's no cheaper).
