Carob Tree
15 Highgate Road Dartmouth Park London NW5 1QX
Trust Highgate to have a posh Greek eatery. Yet while this modern, airy restaurant, down the hill from Highgate Cemetery, ups the ante of the traditional taverna, it also wins the patronage of local Greek families – always a good sign of quality. The care and attention taken over its Cypriot dishes may account for this – most of the dips and sauces are homemade to house recipes, for example – but it also helps that Carob Tree has something to suit all pockets. Meze plates are priced at £4–£5 to allow a tapas-style spread, much of it vegetarian, that can be beefed up by kebabs if required. For something more substantial, the restaurant is well known for its fresh fish, much of it from Cornwall, all of it simply but expertly cooked on a charcoal grill.
