Once a year Rye throws off its midwinter torpor and comes alive for the raucously impressive Rye Bay Scallop Week, which takes over the entire town for a week every February, with a whole host of scalloped-themed events and activities, ranging from shucking demonstrations, tasting sessions, scallop races, even scallop bingo. We reckon the best thing to do with a plump, juicy scallop is to eat it, and there are plenty of opportunities to do so all over town during scallop week – and indeed also in nearby Winchelsea and Camber Sands. The Mermaid Inn serves scallops in a variety of delicious ways all week, as does The George, which hosts a scallop-themed Happy Hour in its bar. Webbe's is another place to sample the best of the local scallops, while a few miles away The Gallivant in Camber Sands and the White Dog Inn in Ewhurst also hoist Scallop Week events
