For a different view of lakeland history spend an hour or two browsing the reconstructed house interiors and workshops located in the old stables at Abbot Hall. It’s the place to see how real people – not just the landed gentry – lived and worked in days gone by, while there’s also a whole section dedicated to the sketches, manuscripts and mementoes of that most cherished of Lake District writers, Arthur Ransome (of Swallows and Amazons fame).
