When the remarkable, and remarkably charismatic,
Imogen Skirving turned her delightful family
home into a bijou hotel some 30 years ago, she was
determined to create something that was warm and
friendly, luxurious and stylish – and she succeeded
in spades. If fashion man Paul Smith likes a place, you can guarantee it is classy and in perfect taste - and this certainly applies to Langar Hall, where Smith is a frequent and favoured guest.
Now run by Imogen’s granddaughter, Langar Hall, is located on the edge of the village at the end of an avenue of lime trees. From the outside, Langar Hall is a pleasant tangle of a building dating from the Napoleonic Wars. The interior though is a canny amalgam of the High Victorian and the modern, with each of its 12 guest rooms boasting an individual style and flavour, from the Bohemia room with its four-poster bed to the rusticated Cricketers with its rocking chair and vintage floor mats.
The hotel restaurant is simply outstanding, and although dogs are only occasionally welcome in selected rooms in the main house, they are always welcome in Agnew’s Chalet, a prettily designed hut in the grounds with its own verandah, and The Pod beside the croquet lawn. The grounds also provide good opportunities for impromptu walks and well-behaved pooches may receive the occasional treat from the kitchen.
