Billed as London's original rock n' roll hotel – owned by music biz insiders – the Karma Sanctum Soho is the capital's most hip and happening boutique hotel. It's partly down to its famous regulars and casual superstar visits – pretty much everyone has been seen here at some point – but also because there's a vibe here that you just don't get anywhere else. You might not get in the Inner Sanctum private members' bar, or catch a secret after-hours DJ set, but the famed rooftop terrace and bar and Japanese-inspired street food restaurant are in-the-know London destinations – and residents get preference.
Occupying knocked-together Georgian townhouses on the Regent Street edge of Soho, it's a cool location for anyone in town for gigs, exhibitions or sightseeing. It's as boutique as all hell, which means thirty elegantly styled guest rooms and suites, ranging from 'Compact' to 'Loft Suite'. Space is tight unless you're in the mid-range rooms and upwards, but we're talking deep, bold colours, big beds and bathrobes, original art, designer lighting, marble bathrooms and sound systems – in fact, pretty much everything you can imagine when you combine the words 'London' and 'boutique'. The Junior Suites have an eye-catching Art Deco style, with their mosaic mirrored glass columns; bag the Loft Suite and you have your own private entrance to the rooftop terrace.
And while you could find these things in other city hotels, what sets the Karma Sanctum apart is that un-stuffy rock n' roll attitude, whether it's the jacuzzi on the roof terrace, the 24-hour bar, the Chrisse Hynde artwork on the restaurant walls or the hugely knowledgeable staff. Plus, you're a short walk from some of the capital's best eating, drinking and music venues – and you never know who might be sitting in the bar when you get back late at night. And just in case you fancy a beatnik weekend in the country, there's a Karma Sanctum in Berkshire too!
