The Herring
Bedruthan Hotel & Spa, Trenance, Mawgan Porth, Cornwall, TR8 4BU
With a name like The Herring, and a sea view from your smart table, you’d expect a menu with a seafood bias. What’s more, here, at the more upmarket of Bedruthan Hotel and Spa's two restaurants – which was named Cornwall's 'restaurant of the year' in 2014 – the fish is sustainably caught in Cornish waters, and served with natural ingredients plucked from the local environment. Despite the introduction of Asian and oriental flavours in the fusion cuisine, all the ingredients are from local hedgerows, local farms and inshore waters. Think along the lines of wild sea spinach, gorseflower, red cod cheek, line-caught sea bass, Cornish oysters and local scallops. However, if you want a break from all things piscatorial, there’s usually the likes of St Ives beef, veal sweetbreads and Cornish duck as well. No children under 12 – but, hey, there's not much they would eat anyway!
