Lots of hotels advertise rooms with sea views, but very few actually offer a view of the sea from every room. And what views! The Atlantic Hotel is well named, occupying an enviable location perched on a headland high above the Towan, Tolcarne, Lusty Glaze and Porth beaches far below, halfway between the centre of Newquay and Fistral beach. It's a large, full-service hotel, with two pools and a spa, restaurant and bar – and a sense of old-fashioned glamour that might just be what you came to Newquay for in the first place. The Beatles filmed their Magical Mystery Tour down here in the 1960s, and the hotel has since featured in the Cornish TV drama Doc Martin.
The hotel has done a good job of updating itself in recent years, recently winning a Taste of the West silver award for its restaurant, and being named Luxury Hotel of the Year 2016 and 2018 by the Luxury Travel Guide and also Luxury Hotel of the Year 2018 by Travel and Hospitality guide. There are no fewer than 57 rooms – each different, but all light and generously proportioned to make the most of the sea views. All are comfortably furnished in a contemporary style, with large beds, big flatscreen TVs, decent-sized bathrooms with toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, and tea- and coffee-making facilities and mini bars. Some have their own terraces, while others are in a separate building positioned to take full advantage of the pool facilities.
It's the sea that dominates, not just in the rooms but throughout the hotel, whose public spaces are in places as grand as the views. Their bar and restaurant – Silks – is a nice, chic venue at any time of day, offering all-day dining from a full menu and tapas too if all you want is a drink and a snack. It's an AA Rosette Restaurant, the first in Newquay to achieve this status. They also do cream teas in the afternoon and serve a Nationally Acclaimed Afternoon High Tea. The champagne bar and outdoor terrace is a nice place to take in those omnipresent Atlantic views at any time of day.
The spa facilities, too, make the most of the views, and have all been recently re-furbished. There's a heated outdoor pool and hot tub which you can enjoy during summer, and the rest of the year a heated indoor pool and hot tub, sauna and steam room, as well as all the treatments you might expect, including massages, Reiki and more. After your treatment you can stroll through the hotel's gardens and take in those views all over again, and if you fancy the idea of getting married in front of those huge sea views the Atlantic also specialises in weddings.
